- THE community dog show which was inaugurated a couple of years ago as a fundraiser for the fund to save Markham and Little Francis as a town green seems to have become a popular annual event.
This year’s event was held at the Marsh and was well attended as ever. New for this year was the introduction of an agility course. It was interesting to watch the various methods employed by owners to persuade their pets over and through the different obstacles.
There were a number of different stalls, refreshments including a barbecue for which all the food was donated by the Lobster Pot and there were various displays throughout the day.
Everyone joined in with great enthusiasm and a total of almost £2000 was raised.
- ON SATURDAY, September 11, the first ever Majorette competition to be staged in the south west is being held at the Beechview Centre in Wyke. Times have yet to be determined according to how many groups enter. At the time of writing only four had applied but it’s not too late to have a go, even at this late stage.
There will be stalls, a clown, and the winning team will be awarded a cup, kindly donated by Councillor Geoff Petherick and Mr. Bradshaw. There will also be a prize given by local businessmen.
For further up to date information telephone 01305 772103.

- A GREAT way to keep fit over the winter months is to join the beginners Scottish Country Dancing group which is held in Wyke Infants School, Shrubbery Lane, on Thursday evenings from 7.30 to 9.45pm.
It’s good fun and exercises both mind and body. The group is very friendly and newcomers are assured of a warm welcome.
Sessions cost £2.50 per week or £12 for each six-week half term if you can commit for every week.
No previous experience is needed. Appropriate footwear can be borrowed at the class. The first session of the autumn term will be held on Thursday, September 16.
This may be preceded by an introductory ‘taster’ session on Sunday, September 12, but this has yet to be confirmed.
