A MAN who says he was hit by a bus has backed calls for action to tackle a ‘dangerous’ corner in Weymouth.

Bryan Sheffield, aged 64, claims he was struck by a vehicle as it swung around the corner from Lower St Alban Street into St Thomas Street.

Mr Sheffield said: “I was walking perfectly normally on the pavement with my wife, brother-in-law and sister-in-law.

“I was hit in the shoulder blade and arm and was pushed into my wife although I didn’t fall over.

“People came to my assistance, the ambulance turned up and the paramedic treated me there.”

He added: “In my opinion it is a dangerous corner. There should be something done to protect the public.

“The bend has too steep a radius and the bus drivers should be made aware to slow down. It needs to be addressed.”

Mr Sheffield, who lives in Shepton Mallet but has a holiday caravan in Weymouth, said the incident happened in July but he came forward after reading in the Echo of concerns about the corner.

Chris Walden-Reece, who owns the Orange Cider Bar, said he saw an elderly holidaymaker being hit by a Portland-bound single decker First bus.

First Bus said it had no record of the incident involving Mr Sheffield in its system or onboard CCTV.

Mark Williams, operations manager for Dorset, First Hampshire and Dorset, said: “The last recorded incident – outside of that which occurred on Monday – involving one of our buses and this specific location was in July 2009.

“We, in our own risk assessments, acknowledge that this turn can be difficult to negotiate. There are few alternative routes though and so if we are to continue to serve North Quay and the town bridge we must use St Thomas Street.

“All of our drivers are given thorough training on all the routes we operate, and we regularly follow this up with reminders about the hazards that they can face. While rare, accidents do unfortunately happen from time to time though.

“Each and every incident that occurs is recorded and investigated with the appropriate action taken as a result.”

Police said that they were called to the incident involving Mr Sheffield.

They said that there was no arrests or offences committed.
