This year was our first experience of the Weymouth Carnival.

It was something I had read much about. Judging from the reports, it was to be run by a different group of people, the route would be changed and motorised floats would be re-introduced due to staleness of previous years.

From our garden we could see all manner of flying events during the morning and from the live webcam pictures it looked amazing.

We arrived about 3pm to what I can only describe as a well-organised event.

Down the entire length of the wide promenade were stalls and sideshows for everyone.

The beach and prom were crowded. Live bands were everywhere, the public address system was clear and had no echo and it was fun all the way.

What surprised me, was the length of time the Red Arrows displayed, it seemed to go on much longer than I have seen before.

The guy on the address system said that the display was constantly changing but they didn’t omit the ‘love heart’, which brought applause.

The procession itself too was never ending and did a return illuminated journey back along the promenade once darkness fell, prior to the firework display.

Someone, somewhere had decided the buses should be monitored to get people home and there were guys with walkie-talkies, bringing new buses in as soon as the previous was full.

I listened with interest to conversations as we made our way home, and everyone was saying they hadn’t seen such a well-run carnival for many years. So there you have it.

As an aside, I’ve just looked at the prom on the webcam and am amazed to see all but one thing cleared away and no litter.
