- WESTHAM residents all pulled together to create a stunning ‘Alice in Westhamland’ float for this year’s carnival.
The time and effort Patricia Soares has put into organising the whole set for the float and all the costumes has been greatly appreciated. The community group also want to thank Westham Methodist church for the very generous use of their premises without which they could not have gone ahead with this project.
Well over 30 youngsters have been involved and a team of enthusiastic helpers has been busy for the last few months getting everything ready for the "Alice in Westhamland" float. Best of all, their efforts have been rewarded with a trophy, winning the carnival award for the best community/charity entrant. Now the group have a cup and certificate and the memory of this year's triumph to spur them on for next year when they hope to take part again. Anyone interested in getting involved in next year's carnival is invited to the community group's AGM which will be held at 7pm on Tuesday, September 7 in the Methodist Hall in Milton Road. Many hands make light work and there is a tremendous amount of work involved in creating an award winning float.
Active Westham has now drawn to a successful conclusion with a BBQ in the community garden at Bedford Road. 20 events were organised throughout the summer holiday, involving over 60 Westham children, and everyone had a great time.
Each year the community has to take on more of the responsibility for staging this activity itself and funding is always a problem.
Westham residents who would like to see this scheme continue for their children are asked to turn out in force for the AGM of the community group (details above) when plans for next year will be discussed.
Anyone living in any of the three Westham Wards is welcome to attend the AGM and help plan activities for the community for the next twelve months.
- MEMBERS of St. Paul's Church, Abbotsbury Road, are holding their last coffee morning of the summer in the vicarage garden on Saturday, August 28, from 10am to noon. There will be hot drinks, home made cakes and more.
All are welcome.
- Wyke Regis Horticultural Society members enjoyed their recent annual open day, relieved that the weather improved after a rather murky start.
The two most popular stalls were the cake stall, well stocked with home baked goodies including very popular cup cakes, all kindly donated by members, and the plant stall.
The event was not quite so well attended as in previous years but this might be at least partly due to the present horrendous traffic jams in the roads accessing Wyke which probably put some people off.
