GLAM rocker Alvin Stardust heads the line-up of musical entertainment for Weymouth Carnival.

The singer will perform live on the beach stage for about an hour from around 4pm.

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council is providing the stage that was used for the Beach Live concerts during the Spirit of the Sea festival. It will be located near Mark Anderson’s sand modelling display opposite the New Vic.

Stardust and his band had been due to play in an area near the King’s Statue but they have been switched to the beach following discussions between the council and the carnival committee.

Weymouth singers Sheryl Lee and Johnny Mac will perform in the afternoon while top local band Shooter will finish off proceedings with a show around 7.30pm.

The live music is being co-ordinated by Maria Greenwood of Wessex FM, who will also be appearing in the procession with her colleagues, and a PA has been supplied by Atlantic Audio.

Meanwhile, bringing a taste of the Caribbean to the carnival will be five-piece steel band The Havana Boys who will play on the raised grass area in front of the King’s Statue from 6pm until the end of the procession.

For a taste of Dorset and beyond look no further today than the international food village on the harbourside near the Condor Ferries office.

Paul Mills who helped to organise the popular Dorset Seafood Festival was invited to co-ordinate stalls for the food village and has come up with a feast of delights.

It is hoped to develop the food village in years to come.

Around 20 stalls will be set up today next to the Condor office and on the raised cargo landing stage.

Produce on offer includes pig roast, Chinese noodles, Thai curry, seafood paella, Latin American street food, Cajun cuisine, Belgian waffles, Spanish churros, popcorn, fudge and ice-cream.

As well as enjoying everything the carnival has to offer, one family will have something extra special to smile about tonight.

People who fill out and return a coupon included in the carnival programme are in with a chance of winning a seven-night holiday for a family of four on a full-board ‘plus’ basis at the five star Sensatori resort on Crete.

The offer has come from Thomson Holidays and is worth around £3,000.

The holiday can be taken between May and July or between September and October next year.

You have to be in it to win it so buy your £3 souvenir programme, available from shops and stalls on the Esplanade.

The winner will be announced after the fireworks at 10pm.
