A children’s centre was forced to close after lead was stolen from its roof, police said.

The metal was taken from the roof of Swanage and Wareham Children’s Centre, at the Lady St Mary First School, in Streche Road, Wareham.

Sergeant Emma Swann, of Wareham Police, said: “Sadly, recent rain has caused the centre’s exposed roof to collapse and the damage has forced the centre to close.

“This is understandably very upsetting for staff and the local community and it will clearly cost a great deal to repair the damage.

“I would appeal for anyone with information to contact Dorset Police.”

Officers believe that the lead was taken sometime between July 30 and August 4.

Anyone whose children attend sessions at Wareham Children’s Centre can call 01929 423589 to find out what the arrangements for activities are. Witnesses and anyone with information should contact Dorset Police on 01305 222222.
