COASTGUARDS warned four men who were set to jump off the top of Durdle Door after a low spring tide.

They were called into action on Wednesday afternoon after beachgoers reported the quartet at the top of the arch.

A coastguard spokesman said: “They had been intending to tombstone, which was not a good idea as it was not long after a very low water spring tide.”

The men climbed down after the advice from the coastguard.

The alert comes after serious of tombstoning incidents at Durdle Door and Portland over the summer.

Youths have been reported jumping into the sea from the landmark in Purbeck as well as from the cliffs near Portland Bill and from Ferrybridge.

Bill Neill, from Weymouth, who was paralysed while tombstoning, also warned against it earlier in the summer.
