Wednesday for the exciting aerial events lined up for Weymouth Carnival.

Organisers are confident they can avoid a repetition of last year when the UK’s premier parachute display team had to pull out because of a row over a landing site.

The Red Devils – the Parachute Regiment Freefall Team – will be dropping in for the first time this year.

They were due to make their debut in 2009 but had to turn back when Weymouth and Portland Borough Council refused to move people on the beach where they were due to land.

The council claimed a landing site had been agreed but a display team official apparently changed the requirement on the day – but by then it was too late to move hundreds of families.

A Red Devils spokesman said: “We’ve been down to do a recce at Weymouth and we’ve explained what we need so hopefully it should be okay.

“We’re looking forward to coming down to Weymouth. It was unfortunate we couldn’t perform last year.”

The spokesman said providing there is clear blue skies, the team would be jumping from 10,000ft.

Team members trail colourful smoke so spectators can see the skydivers building formations.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, comprising an Avro Lancaster, a Supermarine Spitfire and a Hawker Hurricane, will be appearing during what is the 70th anniversary year of the Battle of Britain.

Subject to operational commitments, a search and rescue demonstration will take place in the bay featuring the Portland Coastguard helicopter and Weymouth Lifeboat.

The Breitling Wingwalkers will also be appearing. The 1940s Stearman biplanes will roar through the skies at speeds of up to 150mph.

For times of all the displays check the carnival programme which is now on sale.
