ROLL on the Olympics. One thing though, sailing is not a spectator sport.

The sight of the regular procession of sails bobbing along like a line of ducks circling unseen buoys out in the bay attracts little interest.

One can see they are ‘racing’, but without a clue as to who is winning, no one gives that seaside novelty a second glance.

Millions of pounds are being spent to get publicity-fuelled Olympic fans with great expectations down on the seafront.

The new road and total traffic chaos as roundabouts are dug up are for one purpose only, to get as many people into the town and get their money. I hope they get value from it.

A solution would be to put up giant TV screens on the beach and have an excited commentary from a speedboat while giving us a televised close-up view of the crews wrestling with a spinnaker pole, freeing a jammed furling drum, and even witness an unexpected gybe knocking one of the crew unconscious.

Could a helicopter be spared from chasing drug dealers or speeding motorists, to follow the ‘fleet’ and relay the excitement to a fish ‘n’ chip eating audience staring at the screens? Put it on TV and watch it at home.
