REVISED plans for a new tennis club in Dorchester have received a fresh volley of objections.

Plans to relocate the Dorchester Tennis and Squash Club across Weymouth Avenue to a new building behind Kingdom Hall were rejected earlier in the year following objections from Castle Park residents.

The club has now resubmitted an application with changes to the design of the main building, one less tennis court and enhanced landscaping.

Town councillors and residents claim it has hardly changed from the previous application.

At Dorchester Town Council’s planning and environment committee members voted to recommend refusal of the scheme to West Dorset District Council, which is considering the bid.

Councillor Molly Rennie said: “It is wrong for this whole area.

“It has been slightly changed but it will still have a detrimental effect on the people who live at the bottom end of Castle Park. “We have so many areas of the town where there is open land at the moment where the tennis and squash club could move to.”

Coun Len Heath raised concerns about potential light pollution and Coun Vicki Black voiced fears over the number of vehicles accessing the site from Weymouth Avenue.

Castle Park resident Barry Tempest said little in the new plans had changed and the concerns of residents remained.

He said: “The plans talk about reducing noise, screening and that kind of thing, which makes it seem superficially a great deal more attractive.

“This is still a large development and something much more suitable for a light industrial estate than a piece of land that is designated open land and recreational use.”
