Portesham C of E Primary School has certainly had its share of very exciting events recently.
My friend Liz was lucky enough to have an offer to join the children on their trip to Salisbury Cathedral, an event that happens every four years to ensure that at some point every child visits the Cathedral during their time at the school.
Liz reports that the children, teachers and other passengers set off in two large coaches and a minibus, over 100 people in all, arriving mid morning in Salisbury.
They walked through the Cathedral Close to the Cathedral itself and all were in awe of the size and proportions of this impressive building.
The new font designed by William Pye took 10 years to create and was installed in 2008 for the 750th anniversary of the consecration of the Cathedral and proved of great interest to everyone, especially the amount of water recirculated from the reservoir holding 1700 litres to the three metre wide font itself which holds 1300 litres (3000 litres in all).
The surface of the water is perfectly still and flows from the four corners, reflecting the roof and windows on the surface, which is stunning.
The children were all very well behaved throughout the trip and very interested in their surroundings and seemed to be really enjoying their day out.
They also enjoyed a picnic lunch outside on the grass and played happily until it was time to return to the coaches.
It was a pleasure to share the day with the children who were all a credit to the school, teachers and parents.
