A SECONDARY school in Weymouth has been singled out from across the South Western region for raising its students’ aspirations.
Wey Valley School and Sports College has scooped the prestigious Aimhigher School of the Year award for developing its university links and encouraging students to progress into higher and further education.
The accolade acknowledges the school’s extensive work with the Aimhigher organisation and recognises Wey Valley’s participation in a wide range of activities.
Students have taken part in a wide-ranging programme of campus visits and master classes linked to subject areas both in school and at universities and colleges. Headteacher Phil Thomas said: “This is a fantastic tribute to the efforts and dedication of the staff involved and demonstration of the way that my pupils engage in every opportunity provided to them.”
The students have also had the opportunity to work with ex-students who have graduated or who are currently in higher education.
Groups of graduates have come into school to talk directly to younger students about their university experiences.
Mary Critchell, Aimhigher co-ordinator for the school, said: “The programme is embedded into our careers education programme and has been going from strength to strength.
“It is all about encouraging students to reach their potential and consider all their options.
“The Wey Valley School has a great team of staff supporting all our students and it is really great to have our work recognised.”
She added: “Our ex-students are testament to the solid foundations that the school provides for our students.”
