A PARENT has organised a US-style prom for 11-year-olds.

The prom phenomenon, traditionally the realm of 16-year-old school leavers, has now spread to primary school-aged youngsters.

Mum Corina Fielding has taken on the task of throwing the ‘posh disco’ for St George’s Primary School on Portland–the first of its kind in the area.

The big night will see a Prom King and Queen crowned and some prom attendees arriving in style in some unusual transportation.

Miss Fielding, 33, of Pound Piece, decided to organise the prom with her partner Alan Vincent after her daughter Kacie, 11, requested the bash.

She said: “I don’t think the children are being encouraged to grow up too quickly.

“It’s a friendly disco with some personal touches just making it that little bit more special.

“By calling it a prom it’s a chance for them to dress up if they want to and to have fun with their friends.

“There’s nothing they have to wear in particular, they don’t have to buy fancy dresses or anything, they can come in whatever they feel comfortable in.

“A few people might be arriving in Hummers but not everyone will be.”

Tickets cost £3 for the July 30 prom and are on sale at the school office.

The YMCA on Portland will be transformed for the occasion with balloons, banners, a DJ, soft drinks and a finger buffet.

Miss Fielding, who is studying to become a wedding planner, has received mainly positive feedback about the prom, with just one bit of negative feedback.

“One of the comments I had was that we should let kids be kids.

“But really this is a posh disco, it’s a chance for them to get together before they go up to secondary school.

“They won’t all be going on to the same school and sometimes parents use this as a chance to move away.

“I’m hoping to set a trend. I’ve watched High School Musical myself and I’m hoping to recreate some of that atmosphere.”

A Facebook group has been set up for the prom, which will be held from 7pm to 9.30pm, and teaching staff are also invited.
