A NURSERY teacher from Dorchester has passed away aged 89.
Edna ‘Betty’ Pryce was born Edna Bow in Pomphlett, Plymouth in September 1920 and was the eldest of four children.
She was educated at Totnes High School for Girls and ran her father’s post office in the town at the age of 21.
During the Second World War, Betty met and later married Ron Pryce, a Sergeant in the Intelligence Corps.
The couple later moved to Gloucester where Betty worked as a housekeeper for a friend before moving to Bedford.
Betty joined the Silver Jubilee School in Bedford as a nursery teacher in 1949.
Betty and Ron moved to Dorchester in the 1950s where Betty worked as a nursery teacher.
After moving to Dorchester, Betty worked at St George’s Infants School in Fordington for ten years.
She later transferred to Dorchester Community Nursery School for the last six years of her service as headteacher before retiring aged 60.
Husband Ron, who died 14 years ago, worked in County Hall in Dorchester for the county council’s education department.
The couple had two children, Julia, who died just over two years ago, and Carole, who still lives in Dorchester.
Betty liked to travel and went on cruises and holidays with her sister Kathryn Whiteway to Austria and elsewhere on the continent.
Kathryn, 82, of Weston- super-Mare, said: “She knew what she wanted in life.
“She was a very helpful person, especially to me being the youngest in our family, and she loved her girls and her family.”
