STALWARTS Tony Benn and Billy Bragg will take centre stage at the Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival this weekend.

They will both be appearing tomorrow on the main day of events in the village. Mr Benn will among the speakers on the main stage from 3pm onwards and Mr Bragg, of Burton Bradstock, will be performing at 4.30pm.

The events tomorrow will also include wreath laying at St John’s Church at 1.30pm, the march at 2pm and a Methodist service at 5pm.

Other performers will include Eliza Carthy, the Dolmen and Adrian Edmondson and the Bad Shepherds. Speakers will include TUC president Dougie Rooney and TUC deputy general secretary Frances O’Grady.

There will also be workshops, stalls, music, speakers, a football tournament and children’s entertainment today and tomorrow. The event is organised by the South West TUC and attended by some 8,000 people from Friday to Sunday.

Nigel Costley, regional secretary of the South West TUC, said: “We’re looking forward to another cracking weekend of political discussion and great music.”

Today the general secretaries from all the teaching unions will debate the future of education. It is believed to be the first time they have done so.
