YOUTH workers are putting their hearts into a panoramic trek along the heights of South Dorset.

The team from the Dorset V volunteer group have signed up for the Ridgeway Charity Challenge sponsored walk and run on Sunday, July 25.

The Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) team has joined forces with the British Heart Foundation (BHF) for the first event of its kind.

The Dorchester-based Dorset V group, which connects young people with volunteering opportunities, will be entering at least seven of its staff and a number of young volunteers for the trek.

Tony Armstrong, who is youth volunteer development manager for Dorset V, said: “We are really excited about this new event. It’s the perfect opportunity for our staff and volunteers to come together in a team challenge which will help raise funds to make a difference to others. “As a charity working with young people ourselves, it will also be a great way to encourage physical activity and keeping hearts healthy.”

Participants can walk or run along the full 17-mile length of the South Dorset Ridgeway or tackle a seven-mile option.

Both routes start at Osmington Mills, near Weymouth.

Dorset V is run by the Dorset Youth Association.

V staff taking part include Kate Sandercock, 24, and Fiona Hunt, 25, and her dog Elfie.

Kate, who will be tackling the 17-mile walk, said: “We are looking forward to the walk, and raising awareness and money for the BHF.”

BHF spokesman Zoe Nicholson said: “There really is some spectacular scenery from the top of the South Dorset Ridgeway, and we hope that people will enjoy the route.

“Walking and running are great ways to keep fit and keep hearts healthy, so we want lots of people to take up the Ridgeway Challenge.”
