ORGANISERS hailed the success of the first mid-summer ball staged by Weymouth and Portland Chamber of Commerce. Some 110 guests attended the event at the sailing academy in aid of the Weldmar Hospicecare Trust.

The £3,500 proceeds – £2,000 plus £1,500 of match funding from Lloyds TSB bank – were handed over at a business breakfast.

Florist Fiona Penny, who is a member of the chamber’s executive committee, was the main organiser of the ball.

She said: “It was the first time that we held a summer ball.

“Everyone had a good time and it was a great success.

“I was really pleased that we raised so much money for such a worthwhile local charity.

“I want to thank everyone for supporting the event.”

She added: “It was so successful that we are looking forward to organising another one.”

The proceeds were presented to Weldmar director of fundraising Caroline Nickinson at a chamber of commerce and Lloyds TSB business breakfast.

Lloyds TSB added £1,500 though its scheme whereby it match-funds up to £500 for charity per employee.

Three of the bank’s commercial managers based at the Weymouth branch dedicated their £500 match-funding to the charity. They were Anna-Maria Geare, Jeremy Weekes and David Morton.

Anna-Maria, who is the bank’s charity co-ordinator, said that Lloyds TSB in Weymouth was supporting Weldmar this year – including staff taking part in the annual Midnight Walk.

Weldmar director of fundraising Caroline Nickinson said: “We’re so very grateful for the generosity of Chamber members.

“All the money donated goes towards patients, who are the whole purpose of the Hospice Trust.”

Some 78 delegates attended the business breakfast at the Rendezvous in Weymouth. The regular breakfast events have continued to grow in size and popularity.

Chamber president Nigel Reed said: “I’m delighted the event was so successful in raising money for a local charity that provides such a vital service.

“Thanks also go to the businesses that attended and supported the evening, who had the added bonus of a really enjoyable night as well.”
