A STUDENT from Weymouth is fuming after his car was vandalised in broad daylight.
Shaun Groves was on his way to work when he discovered his rear windscreen had been smashed on Monday.
The 23-year-old, of Barrow Rise, Wyke Regis, said it was a struggle to make ends meet as a student without having to fork out for his insurance excess.
Mr Groves found his Honda Civic with a 10cm square hole in the rear windscreen at 5.30pm when he was due to drive to work at the Galley Bistro and Bar in Hope Square.
The criminology masters student said that his mother, Tanya Denning, saw his car at 4.30pm and so the crime must have been committed between 4.30pm and 5.30pm.
He said: “I was absolutely fuming when I saw it.
“I assumed that maybe it was a kid’s ball that went through because a lot of the kids play in the area.
“But when I looked inside nothing was there so it must have been deliberately smashed.
“I am skint as it is being a student – and then some mindless idiot goes and does that.
“I work really hard for everything I have got so this is so frustrating.”
The Portsmouth University student added that his studies had been affected by what had happened.
He said: “It is a massive inconvenience because I drive to work and I am still commuting to university.”
Mr Groves said he lost his no claims discount because of the claim where he had to fork out £65 to cover the excess.
He also said that his yearly insurance would increase by £200 when he renewed it.
Mr Groves added that he would urge anyone who saw anything to come forward.
He said: “It was broad daylight and there was a lot of kids and people about – I would be quite shocked if no one saw anything.”
His mother Tanya said that her husband had also been subject to car vandalism.
She said: “He had his car damaged a few weeks ago and we are very angry at this latest event.
“My son is working hard to try and fund himself through his masters degree and can ill afford to pay for someone else’s mindless violence.”
A spokesman for Dorset Police said: “Dorset Police received a report of criminal damage to a grey Honda Civic on Monday at 5.30pm.
“We would appeal for witnesses and anyone with information to come forward in confidence.”
