PLANS for two new covered areas at Dorchester market have sparked objections.
Market operators Ensor wants to demolish part of the North Linneys towards the top of the site as part of a scheme to improve the market.
They intend to build two new covered areas similar to the roof built in 2001 over the bottom of the site.
But members of Dorchester Town Council’s planning and environment committee objected to the application.
Coun Carolyn Biggs said: “Putting tin roofs on stilts is not attractive.”
The new covers would go over areas where stalls are presently set out in the open air.
The North Linneys are being knocked down to provide more space for stalls and better circulation for visitors.
Agents for Ensor the Malcolm Wright Partnership lodged the plans with the district council. A letter to the council says: “In order to maintain the vibrance of the market and to provide more weather protection it is proposed to construct two new covers.”
