MILLIONS will be trimmed from council budgets in Dorset as local authorities feel the squeeze of the government’s austerity measures.
Councils knew the bad news was coming, but Communities and Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles MP has now announced the across-the-board cuts to this years’ grants for councils – saving £1.166 billion nationally.
Dorset County Council faces cuts of almost £7million from its government funding this year, including £2.5 million from its revenue grant.
Leader of Dorset County Council Angus Campbell warned things would ‘get harder over the years to come’.
“We must continue to work hard at gaining efficiencies, protecting front line services,” he added.
Mr Pickles said reducing the national deficit of £156bn was ‘the most urgent issue facing Britain’.
He said steps had been taken to limit the impact and councils had been given the flexibility they need to determine where they make savings.
