DESIGNERS of the new Weymouth park and ride scheme should consider using trains instead of buses, according to Councillor David Mannings.

He suggests that the proposed park and ride scheme make use of the existing railway track between a site near north Lodmoor and the town centre.

His comments were made at a meeting of the public transport forum at Weymouth and Portland Borough Council following a review of the proposed scheme.

David Beaman of Sureline Buses also suggested that the council look towards York as an example of a tourist resort with a successful, 'modern' and 'secure' park and ride system.

Mr Beaman was keen to point out that concerns over security at the new site could be addressed by having a similar set up to the most recent park and ride in York.

He said the site was well organised and looked after by a security company.

It is hoped that a new park and ride scheme will reduce congestion in the town centre and bring more visitors to the area.

There is already a seasonal park and ride system at Lodmoor which has been up and running since 2000.

But Andy Shaw of Dorset County Council said the authority was looking to find other sites for another park and ride project.

Further park and ride facilities form part of the major plans to improve transport links into Weymouth and Portland which include the Weymouth relief road.

Coun Mannings said: "There's already a railway line there which could be used for a park and ride.

"Why do we need more buses on the road?"

However, Steve Williams of Dorset County council said: "A bus service would be a lot more flexible and a lot cheaper."

Barry Thirwell of Dorset County council also said that there may not be enough funding to reinstate a railway service.
