ABOUT 100 members of the Dorset Royal British Legion witnessed the laying up of the county standard.
Former servicemen from legion branches throughout Dorset, led by the Band of the Royal Hussars from Bovington Camp, paraded from the Mowlem Theatre in Shore Road to St Mary's Church to watch rector the Rev John Wood receive the standard from Major General Richard Keightley, CB.
The standard, which is being replaced, will now hang in the church.
Dorset county vice-chairman of the Royal British Legion, Joe Clark said: "It's being given a place on honour in the church as a place of retirement."
The ceremony was also marked with a substantial buffet lunch, prepared by members of the women's section, in Swanage Royal British Legion Club.
