A MYSTERY messenger has thanked dozens of gardeners for brightening up Weymouth with their colourful blooms.

The page-long letter thanking residents for their 'front of house display' and 'giving so much pleasure this summer' was hand delivered to homes along Dorchester Road, Weymouth.

The only information residents have about the author is in the printed letter.

It would appear that the 'mystery person' is a regular passenger on a bus between Weymouth and Dorchester.

One overwhelmed recipient of the thank you letter was Susan Pykett, of Dorchester Road. She said: "I think it's an elderly professional gentleman because the letter seemed so carefully planned.

"I would be more than pleased if the mystery person could identify him or herself in order for me to reciprocate and thank him or her personally for such kind thoughts in going to such lengths to distribute a hundred or more such words of thanks."

Another resident gardener Christine Burden, of Dorchester Road, said the letter brought a tear to her eye.

She added: "It bought a lump to the throat that in this day and age someone had taken the time and trouble to praise our efforts.

"You do your garden because you enjoy it anyway and obviously you hope it gives pleasure to other people."

Mrs Pykett, who lives near Ridgeway Hill, believes that a copy of the letter was delivered to residents all along the road which spans from Weymouth seafront, through Broadwey and Upwey towards Dorchester.

She said that the 'thank you' seemed even more appreciative with the thought that the person responsible had walked more than three miles to deliver letters to the residents.

In the letter, the thoughtful stranger said: "Thank you for providing a bus traveller with so much pleasure over the last few months.

"Please accept my general thank you as a token of appreciation for your particular efforts."

Mrs Burden added: "I just wanted to thank the person for their thanks. It all makes it all even more worthwhile." Do you know the mystery writer? If so, please contact the Echo on 01305 830999.
