A CLUB threatened with closure has been granted a stay of execution following an emergency meeting.
A total of 68 members of the Weymouth Royal British Legion turned up at the meeting to voice concern over plans to shut the King Street club.
It was called after bosses warned the club - which opened shortly after the Second World War - could not continue trading without a boost in trade.
Club secretary David White said although they had 412 members only about 60 had used the building over the past year.
But at last week's meeting the committee decided to keep it open for another month and see how members respond.
Mr White said: "We had a meeting and there were the usual cries of 'we don't want the club to close'.
"As a result we are now looking at getting a business plan put in place to cover the short to medium term situation of and see where we can go from here.
"We have got the help of a financial consultant who reckons the situation is not as gloomy as we first thought. He is going to look at what can be done to increase use of the club."
Mr White said the situation would be reviewed at a meeting on September 28 at 7pm but closure remained an option.
He added: "After all 68 people out of 412 is not a lot of people to turn up to a meeting.
"At the end of the day we need people to come in."
