WINGER James Ward ran in a hat-trick as Oakmeadians powered through to round two of the National Trophy with a resounding 40-23 defeat of Aylesbury.

Despite blooding five newcomers, Oaks produced some dazzling running rugby as they defied the baking conditions to overrun their opponents.

Ward's deadly display of finishing complemented an accurate kicking display by Will Croker, who bagged himself a 15-point haul.

And Oaks will now enjoy another home tie with Weston-Super-Mare-based Hornets in round two.

A scrappy first 10 minutes gave way to a burst of scoring as Steve Harman slipped the ball to Al Blewitt who touched down for Oaks' first try of the season.

The hosts added their second score just four minutes later, Jo Tuilua releasing Vilimone Simo who outpaced the defence to make it 12-0.

But the visitors' response was rapid as Bradley Vyse chased a kick ahead and touched down to reduce the deficit on 18 minutes.

However, the try-fest continued as Reed benefited from a fine kick from Harman to grab his first of the afternoon just five minutes later.

Two Croker penalties extended the home side's lead to 25-5 by the break and Oaks were quick to turn the screw and make sure of their passage after the restart.

Despite a bright opening to the second period from Aylesbury, Tuilua intercepted a misplaced pass and raced 60m before releasing Reed for his second and Oaks' fourth score.

With the heat taking its toll, a rash of substitutions disrupted the home side's flow and Aylesbury enjoyed a purple patch, adding two more tries, although they were helped by yellow cards for Neil Easterbrook and Blewitt.

But it was Reed who had the last word and banished any hopes of a remarkable comeback as he profited from a strong push at a five-metre scrum to compete his treble.

Oakmeadians: Vatu (Wedge), Reed, Tuilua, Puzas, Simo, Harman (Tisshaw), Doughty, Bongard, Gallagher, Clarke (Riley), Hudson, Croker, Blewitt, Flower (Easterbrook), Strydom.

In Dorset and Wilts Division One South, Oaks 2nds went down 27-14 to Wimborne 2nds.

Swanage and Wareham lived on their nerves as they endured an edgy passage through to round two of the National Trophy with a 37-34 victory at Coney Hill.

Swans were good value for the win but made heavy weather of booking a trip to St Ives in the next round as they almost let slip a 14-point advantage late on.

The hosts took an early 6-3 lead but a typical rolling maul from the visitors cut through their defence, with scrum-half Mark Woolley claiming Swans' first try.

But despite Phil Graves' conversion, Coney Hill responded with a score of their own to lead 13-10 at the break.

A strong second-half showing looked to have won the tie for the Bestwall side. First a catch-and-drive move from a line-out put Darren Penny over.

Then on 56 minutes, Woolley went over for his second try before Rob Ayres crossed and then Simon Robins slipped in Penny for his second to put Swans seemingly home and dry at 34-20.

But two tries in the last few minutes had the visitors rocking but they held on to secure their passage and the visit to Cornwall.
