BOURNEMOUTH Poppies still top Wessex One but their 100-per-cent start to the campaign was ended at crisis club AFC Newbury.

Off the back of five straight wins in the league, Pete Moore's men would have been confident of extending their run at troubled Newbury.

But they contributed to their own downfall as Adie Briscoe's own goal put them behind and Billy Huntley made it two in first-half stoppage time.

But there was still time for the visitors to win a penalty, converted by Karim Benssaouda, to give themselves hope.

But their hopes were blighted by a red card for Fawzi Saadi for swearing and despite dominating much of the second half, they could not find an equaliser.

Poppies boss Pete Moore said: "I don't think they had a proper shot on target as the first goal was an own goal and the second just hit the back of the guy's head and went in.

"They were the worst side we've played so far and we had 85-per-cent of the play but could not put the ball in the net.

"We were head and shoulders the better side but they did defend well to be fair to them and it just wasn't our day."

Lymington Town returned from their trip to Bemerton Heath Harlequins with three points as they continue to hold their own in Wessex One.

Kevin James netted a brace while Dave Egerton added the third, with Stuart Findlay netting Harlequins' consolation from the spot.

Thatcham Town have now drawn level with Poppies at the summit after their 2-1 away victory at Cowes Sports.
