AN EXASPERATED Mark Morris is considering making a comeback after his defenders let him down again at Welling.
"We've reached a situation where I am seriously considering pulling my boots out again," said the 42-year-old former Wimbledon, Shef-field United and Bournemouth central defender after his side shipped their 20th goal in six games.
"I can't think I could do any worse than what I saw in the first half at Welling."
The Magpies found themselves three goals down after half an hour before bravely fighting their way back into the game to equalise with goals from Gareth Keeping and second half substitutes Justin Keeler and Jamie Brown.
But all their good work came to nothing just five minutes from time. Magpies teenage former Cherries youth team goalkeeper Nick Jones was crowded out at a corner allowing Welling's Danny Kedwell to spare his side's
blushes from close range.
"I'm not putting any blame on Nick because there were a lot worse culprits out there than him," said Morris.
"People say he's not quite big enough, but I've been very pleased with him and he made some fantastic saves before that one mistake.
"He had two six-footers standing in front of him and I'm sure he will learn how to deal with that as he gains experience of men's football."
Morris did point the finger at some of the more experienced men in his back line.
"We didn't turn up until half an hour after the game kicked off," he said. "We played with three centre halves but every time they got a free kick or a corner into the area they looked as though they were going to score.
"Our defending in that half hour was awful. We were letting the ball bounce in our area, we weren't picking up our markers and no-one was doing any marshalling.
"Our defending beggared belief and although I defend my players most of the time I couldn't defend them after that comedy of errors.
"I expect better from experienced players who I know are capable of giving me much more, but perhaps the time has come to take a long, hard look at the situation and see if I can change it.
"I can't go out and buy players so I will have to get on the phone this week and see if I can loan someone to improve our defence.
"If that's not possible I have youngsters like Dan Bulley, Nathan Walker and Ryan Hill who I know are just itching to be given their chance. All I want is some consistency and some defenders who are willing to attack the ball, win headers and not make mistakes
