DON't be put off by the naff cover, Stander isn't a half bad film. Based on the exploits of Andre Stander, a Johannesburg police captain turned bank robber in the '70s, Stander runs a simple line.
Stander (Thomas Jane, looking unfortunately like a young Christopher Lambert) is fed to the teeth with the corruption within the police force and the brutality he's forced to carry out by the Apartheid system.
His exasperation comes to a head as he remarks "a white man could get away with anything at the moment" and robs a few banks. He's caught, imprisoned, befriends a pair of likeminded inmates, escapes and away he goes again.
Stander is not a blockbuster but it's all the better for it.
