COMMUNITY leaders in Highcliffe say they are shocked that a father suffered nasty facial injuries after being assaulted by a youth wielding an empty beer bottle.
The 39-year-old dad was set upon while walking through the recreation ground at the junction of Wharncliffe and Lymington Roads on Sunday, August 28.
The attack was witnessed by his two young children.
Police say the victim was struck when he tried to remonstrate with a group of teenagers who had dropped litter.
He suffered a badly broken nose and cuts to his face.
Highcliffe Residents' Association security committee member Ron Lawrie said: "You don't expect such a nasty attack in this area, and it's not the usual sort of thing that happens.
"Residents are concerned about antisocial behaviour because it is on the increase, albeit very slowly.
"I shall be contacting the police to see if they have any more details about this incident. I'm also interested in more information about an incident with a woman who was attacked in Gordon Road in July. I understand two youths were involved.
"But the main type of problem we have is with youngsters doing 'wheelies' in the Crow's Nest car park."
Highcliffe ward councillor Malcolm Mawbey said: "We have the occasional trouble but nothing as serious as this attack. But I think it's too early to say if it's a growing problem.
"There's been the odd occasion where teenagers drive round the cliff-top car park late at night, and I hope this attack on the father isn't a sign of nasty things to come.
"I shall follow it up with the police and talk to the community safety people to see if there are lessons to be learned."
Police are still appealing for witnesses to the attack. Call 01202 222222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
