A PETITION is being circulated by West Parley residents concerned at plans by a property tycoon to erect 28 flats on a disused petrol station.
Dave Wells insists the development on New Road, Parley Cross, will not be social housing but affordable rental flats for local workers.
Plans for 17 two-bed flats and 11 one-bed flats have been submitted to East Dorset District Council and are causing a local stir.
The petition, which is being distributed to properties in the area, describes the proposal as: "over-development of the site" which: "would be unsightly".
It continues: "Adjacent bungalows would be overshadowed by the development, stress and worry would be caused to residents, especially the aged.
"The development is not in keeping with the village. Previously any development of this type has been denied. If it is passed then it is the death of West Parley in its current form."
The land was bought from Bollingwood - an American company connected to Texico garages. Mr Wells has also purchased a garage in Ringwood Road, Park-stone and one in Seabourne Road, Southbourne - both of which are earmarked for development.
Defending his plans for West Parley he said: "The people who move in will pay a deposit and four weeks rent up front - that's not social housing. Some people seem to think if you rent you're a second class citizen but it's the contin-ental way not to buy until you're in your 30s or 40s.
"At the moment when you approach the traffic lights you just see a load of cars and boats for sale - it's really a big empty space.
"The local plan has plans for a big supermarket nearby so this will be in keeping."
He said the flats would be open to residents of all ages and offer a flexible tenancy agreement, allowing them to sign up for just four weeks.
Answering concerns of bungalows being overshadowed Mr Wells said they have purchased one such neighbouring property.
He added: "I would be happy to discuss the plans with anyone. They can call me direct on 01202 245151."
East Dorset councillors have yet to discuss the proposal.
