IT is only a few years since former international runner Williard Chinhanhu caused a stir on the Dorset road-racing scene by winning the Sturminster Newton half-marathon at a canter.
Despite being in the middle of a protracted battle for asylum to prevent him being forced to return to Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe, he made a return appearance to the race in north Dorset on Sunday.
Chinhanhu has lost fitness through an enforced stay at a detention centre that only ended last month - so he was unlikely to challenge for honours this year.
But with members of his adopted club Poole Runners and others among the local running fraternity giving him a warm welcome, he strode out for a commendable eighth overall.
Despite it being a pleasant summer's day, Chinhanhu wore tracksuit bottoms as well as a tee-shirt and running vest to complete the 13.1 miles in one hour 18 minutes and 18 seconds.
But even fully fit he would have been hard pressed to contain in-form winner Carl Morris who raced to victory by almost four minutes.
The Purbeck teacher stopped the clock at 1:10:08 and was followed across the line by Peter Grist in 1:13:52.
Both were competing in the vests of their first claim club Wells City Harriers, but at the same time helped gather points in the Dorset Road Race League for their second-claim clubs, Morris for Poole AC and Grist for Poole Runners.
With Martin Lewis fourth, Andy Howse (another second claim counter) seventh, Chinhanhu eighth and Dave Patrick 11th, the men's team league win went to Poole Runners bringing the club to a 4-4 stand-off with Poole AC with two races remaining to decide the championship.
First veteran was fifth-placed Andy Clements (Poole AC), with first V60 Geoff Scott (Poole Runners).
In the women's race it was Thames Hare and Hounds' Alison Outram, now living locally, who took the honours in 13th place in 1:18:59.
Yeovil's Jenny Moore was next, just under a minute ahead of third placed Christine Thomas who led the Poole Runners' winning team of Yvonne Tibble (1st F45), Janice Palmer, and Trina Lindop.
In the 5k race Dan Cheney, who celebrated his 18th birthday the day before, was first in 17:26 as he headed teammates Ryan Trew and Bradley Marsh in a Poole Runners clean sweep.
Zoe Lamb was second in the women's race.
