DAVID Laws celebrated his birthday in spectacular fashion last night.

The 33-year-old striker grabbed a terrific brace as the Terras routed Premier Division bottom side Salisbury City 4-0 in a Dr Martens Cup first round tie at the Wessex Stadium.

Laws' first half double takes his season's tally to a dozen, while his Weymouth career statistics stand at a staggering 183 goals in 299 appearances.

He said: "Two goals on my birthday and through to the next round, I've got to be happy with that. I had a great chance to get a hat-trick in the second-half when I went through down the left and that would have been the icing on the cake.

"I kept saying to myself blast it, hit it, but for some reason I've tried to dink it which looked pathetic and the keepers' made an easy save."

He added: "But confidence is high at the moment, especially with me. We're up there second in the table and still in three cup competitions and all the lads will tell you that we've done without really playing that well this season."

For the second time in four day's, Laws' goal scoring exploits were rewarded with a second-half substitution, but the big man wasn't complaining.

"I'm happy with that", he said. "If I score in every game I play and get substituted, then I certainly won't be complaining."

Laws' two strikes were followed up by late efforts from Lee Phillips and Ian Hutchinson as the Terras made sure there were no happy returns for ex-fans' favourite and current Whites boss Taffy Richardson.

Manager Andy Mason said: "Salisbury battled hard enough and with better finishing they might have scored a goal or two. But they're obviously low on confidence at the moment, which definitely showed, and few teams are going to come here and give us that much time and space on the ball.

"At times we probably tried to be a little bit too clever and it was from mistakes that we let them in, but to our credit I wanted the boys to knock it around and enjoy themselves and that's exactly what they did. "Maybe we were a bit cavalier at times with eight instead of two men supporting in midfield and you don't often get the luxury of being able to do that." He added: "But overall I'm pleased with both the result and the performance. I want to do well in this competition and there's nothing better for the confidence than to keep on winning your games."
