RAILWAY stations in the New Forest are to become more cycle-friendly in a £60,000 package of improvements from next month.

Hampshire County Council, backed by South West Trains, is continuing its drive to persuade more people to leave their cars at home with the introduction of cycle lockers.

New Milton, Sway, Lymington and Hinton Admiral have all been earmarked for the scheme, encouraging more commuters and other residents to use a mixture of public transport and pedal power.

County surveyor John Ekins said: "All these stations have experienced growth in patronage over recent years, and roads become heavily congested at times of peak rail demand.

"Many Hampshire stations are well suited to access by bicycle, yet none currently has secure cycle lockers, a particular omission at unstaffed or semi-staffed stations, where theft or vandalism is likely to be a deterrent."

The stainless steel lockers, which will feature integral hoops to deter vandals or thieves, will be maintained by station operators. New Milton will have an additional three bike shelters.

Each station - with the exception of Sway - will also be provided with new maps of local bus stops, in a further attempt to promote public transport.
