VOLUNTEERS are needed from the New Forest and Hampshire for an initiative to help stop young criminals from re-offending.
From April 1, 2002 young offenders pleading guilty and appearing for the first time in court will be subject to a referral order.
This new penalty will be overseen by a panel consisting of two members of the public and the Wessex Youth Offending Team is now appealing for volunteers to join the new scheme.
These volunteers will be advised by a team member who will draw up a contract with the young offender.
The referral order - which will be between three and 12 months - will also involve reparation to the victim of the crime plus a tailor-made programme to prevent re-offending. The victim of crime will also get the chance to address the panel and explain how the offence affected them.
People who wish to volunteer to be on the panel must be aged over 18 and be able to spare time to attend panels on a regular basis. For an information pack call 01962 876102.
