ANOTHER New Forest foal was left in agony after being mowed down by a hit-and-run driver.
On Sunday November 11 a chestnut colt foal suffered a broken back after being hit by a motorist at Picket Post, near Ringwood - a couple of weeks after another foal was severely injured in a hit-and-run at Linwood.
Like the Linwood foal, this latest casualty had to be destroyed.
A commoner called out to deal with the Picket Post accident, Jonathan Gerelli, said: "A passing motorist spotted the foal lying in the road and reported the incident to the police - the motorist involved did not report the accident. The foal had suffered a broken back and I had to destroy it to stop its suffering.
"As soon as the clocks go back these accidents always shoot up. People complain of not being able to see because of on-coming vehicles but if they can't see they should slow down.
"If they hit an animal they must report the accident.
"The danger is the pony can move off with a broken leg or some other injury and be left to suffer for a day, or even days before anyone knows about it."
Both the Verderers and the Commoners Animal Protection Society offer rewards for information leading to the conviction of a hit-and-run drivers.
