TRADING standards services in Dorset have been recognised as some of the best in the country.
The county council team has been commended by judges in the national 2001 Award for Excellence in Trading Standards competition.
Director general of trading standards John Vickers congratulated the county council's team for its protection and advice.
Mr Vickers said: "The applicants for the awards are rigorously assessed by an independent team of experts under the supervision of a distinguished selection panel representing consumer and business organisations.
"I congratulate Dorset on its success."
The team was praised for its advice program for holiday accommodation owners and the levels of service made available to visitors.
Staff were also congratulated on their professional approach, good teamwork and for maintaining a high public profile within the community.
The level of consultation between staff and management was also seen to be particularly good.
Mr Vickers said: "This award recognises the role trading standards play in the community.
"By educating businesses and prosecuting those who break the law, they improve the quality of life for local consumers.
"The advice they give helps consumers get a fair deal."
The awards began in 1997 to raise the profile of trading standards.
In a ceremony at the Bank of England Museum, chairman of Dorset County Council corporate services overview committee Ian Angus Campbell accepted the award on behalf of everyone from the council's trading standards department.
