PIRATES chiefs were still tight-lipped today about the identity of their latest target.
The Elite League club are due to announce the third confirmed rider of their 2002 line-up to their fans tonight.
But when pressed, Poole co-promoter Matt Ford refused to divulge the rider's name.
He stressed the mystery man would be making an appearance during the inaugural fund-raising event of a new supporters' club at Poole Stadium tonight. And Ford added the track would not officially be announcing the signing to the media until tomorrow.
The good money, however, is on inspirational captain Gary Havelock returning to Wimborne Road for a fifth successive season.
It is believed he wants to continue riding for Poole, although Havelock declined to comment about his future earlier today.
To complicate matters, it is believed at least three other top-flight clubs are interested in having Havelock in their line-ups. If Havelock isn't the man, then it is likely to be Hans Andersen, who Pirates were very impressed with last season.
Both the Dane and Poole's management have publicly stressed it was 99 per cent certain the rider would return for a second season.
One rider who will definitely be at Poole Stadium tonight is Tony Rickardsson.
He is in the town for a couple of days with his manager Carl Blomfeldt.
Rickardsson is the one Grand Prix rider Pirates are allowed to have in their team if that controversial new rule is rubber-stamped, as expected, at the British Speedway Promoters' Association's annual conference this weekend.
He only has to put pen to paper on a deal already agreed verbally.
Tonight's function, a speedway quiz including buffet meal, begins at 7.30pm. Enter a team of four for £7, but contact Stan or Val Vatcher on 01202 691143 as soon as possible. If you don't want to enter, but still want to attend, contact the Vatchers so they can order enough buffet meals.
Tickets must be bought before tonight.
