A NEW centre for children is set to open in the Piddle Valley, thanks to a £9,500 lottery boost.
The Piddle Valley Kids' Club will be based at the Piddle Valley First School in Piddletrenthide.
Organisers hope the new facility, which will offer child-care before and after school, will provide parents or guardians with greater freedom.
Kate Keel, who will be managing the club, said: "The idea is for children to have fun with a varied programme, including art, sport and activities.
"A snack will be provided and there will also be a quiet area where children can read, rest or do their homework.
"Children will be supervised by qualified staff at all times."
David Webb, a school governor and chairman of the group who made the lottery application, said they were very excited and hoped to open the club in January.
He said the lottery cash would be used to buy equipment and to help the club through its first year. He said: "Research showed us that there is a need for this type of facility in the Piddle Valley and surrounding areas.
"But without money to pay for all the resources required - as well as start up costs - it would not be possible to turn the idea into reality."
He added: "Parents with limited income can claim a Working Families Tax Credit of up to 70 per cent of the fees when using the club."
The club will initially offer places for 20 youngsters aged between four and nine. It is hoped eventually to open throughout the school holidays.
