With the onset of winter police are warning the public to be on their guard against thieves and burglars.
Insp John Wort, force crime prevention officer, said: "Dorset is a very safe place to live, but unfortunately thieves do exist and will take advantage of any opportunity to commit crime.
He added: "Although we give advice all year round, it is significantly important throughout the autumn, and run up to Christmas, that the public take our advice seriously."
Reduce the risk by taking the following advice:
Use a well-lit area to park your car and leave it secure
Don't leave valuables in your vehicle
The smallest item can attract a thief's attention
Use your vehicle security. Older vehicles are particularly vulnerable. Purchase and use a security device.
At least 96 per cent of all burglaries are from premises where an alarm system is not fitted. If you have an alarm, use it. If you don't, consider treating yourself to one.
Ensure your windows and doors are locked and secure.
If possible, make access to the rear of the house difficult for an intruder.
Low cost lighting around the house is a good deterrent and provides reassurance.
Don't leave valuables on view.
Be a good neighbour. Look after each other.
