A FESTIVE display of Christmas lights has been stolen from outside Weymouth's Pavilion theatre - just hours after they were switched on.

The town centre was transformed into a seasonal wonderland when Borough Mayor Joy Stanley turned on the Christmas lights on Saturday.

The mayor headed a festive procession through the town in the build-up to the ceremony. A colourful procession featuring vintage cars and a variety of pantomime characters drew large crowds into Weymouth to enjoy the seasonal atmosphere.

But thieves spoilt the festive mood when they snatched lights from a display outside the Pavilion during the weekend.

A total of around 20 multi-coloured bulbs were taken.

Coun Stanley said: "It is appalling - I can't understand what drives people to do this sort of thing. The lights had only been on for a few hours.

"Christmas should be a time for goodwill. The lights are there to be enjoyed by everyone in the borough, young and old. The thieves responsible should be ashamed of themselves for taking away such a simple pleasure and trying to spoil Christmas for other people."

Pavilion manager Steve Young said: "About 20 bulbs were taken from the display and arrangements are being made to replace them.

"It is unfortunate, but it is just part of life and won't stop us from making preparations for the festive season.

"This is a busy time of year for us, getting ready for the pantomime and a large number of functions.

"We won't let the actions of one or two individuals prevent us from celebrating Christmas."

Police are investigating the theft.

A Dorset Police spokesman said: "We are aware that a large number of Christmas lights were stolen and are appealing for anyone with information to contact us." Phone Weymouth police station on (01305) 220512.

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council has also been forced to replace the Christmas tree at the King's Statue for safety reasons. The tree was removed when the trunk started to split and a new one will be put up within the next few days.
