WEYMOUTH'S Hockey heroes have been short-listed for the title of Dorset's top team.

The Seasiders, who brought glory to the town with their 3-0 victory over 1999 champions Tring in last season's final of the English Hockey Association Vase at the national hockey stadium in Milton Keynes, will know tomorrow night whether they have added another accolade to their triumph.

Skipper Mike Baker and several of his team will be at Bournemouth's Russell Coates Museum to hear the announcement of the Dorset Sports Awards 2001.

"We are up for the Dorset Senior Team of the Year award and it would cap a great chapter in the club's history if we could add that to the EHA Vase win," he said. "We had a memorable day up at Milton Keynes in the final when the whole club got behind us and we had a following of around 300 people.

"I've no idea who we are up against for the top team award, but I suspect Poole Pirates speedway team are in the picture somewhere after winning the Craven Shield and finishing runners-up in the league."

The hockey squad's outstanding achievement has recently been recognised by the Weymouth and Portland Borough Council with the presentation by Mayor Joy Stanley of a framed certificate congratulating them on their success.

"We were honoured and highly flattered to be invited along to the Mayor's Parlour to receive the award and about 50 players, family and friends went along to a reception," said Baker. "It's the first time I can ever remember the club being recognised in this way and it was a thoroughly enjoyable occasion."

Club chairman Dougald Lockhart thanked the Mayor on behalf of the club.
