WEYMOUTH begin their FA Umbro Trophy challenge with a tricky
second round trip to Chesham United tomorrow, kick-off 3pm.
The Buckinghamshire outfit are going great guns in the Ryman Premier Division and boss Andy Mason is expecting his Dr Martens Premier Division high flyers to be severely tested at the Meadow.
Mason said: "The FA Trophy is a competition we've done well in recently and it certainly kicked our season into life last year. That's when we played some of our best football and I still think we were unfortunate to go out against Southport at the Wessex Stadium.
"Obviously we want another good run this time around but an away trip to Chesham is a fairly tough place to start.
"They're going really well in the Ryman Premier Division at the moment and they'll coming into the tie with a six-match unbeaten run behind them. But our record against teams from that league is pretty good and we've just got to make sure that we're at the races tomorrow afternoon."
The Terras travel to the home counties with a full-strength squad to choose from after Darran Rowbotham, Ryan Cross, Martin Underhay and Kevin Parker all came through Tuesday's Dorset Senior Cup clash against Weymouth Sports.
"Those four lads were all in need of some match practice," explained Mason, "and all of them came through it okay. Kevin Parker tired towards the end which is not surprising after a long lay off, but he'll be alright having now rested for a couple of days.
"Mark Robinson was our only slight doubt after getting a dead leg up at Cambridge last weekend and that's why he wasn't involved against Sports. But leaving him out was more of a precautionary measure and so I'm expecting him to be fine as well."
Sports loan goalkeeper Gavin Bates has been rewarded for his man-of-the-match performance in midweek - he's been recalled by the Terras and will act as Danny Potter's understudy on the bench.
Mason added: "Gavin was in tremendous form us on Tuesday and with five substitutes allowed in the Trophy, we've decided to recall him and give him a place on the bench.
"Not that he had anything to prove against us. He's been around long enough for us to know how good he is and I think he thoroughly deserves to be with the first team tomorrow."
Meanwhile Generals' manager Bob Dowie - brother of former Northern Ireland international Ian - does have a few selection problems and he'll be forced to sweat on the results of pre-match fitness tests on four of his first team regulars.
David Pratt, Richard Goddard, Victor Renner and Terry Bows all have knocks and niggles while new boy Paul Armstrong definitely misses out because he's cup tied.
Mason concluded: "They're going to be strong whoever plays and we'll have to keep our eye on Wayne Andrews who is their real danger man in front of goal."
n Weymouth Reserves entertain Newbury in the Wessex Combination League tomorrow, kick-off at the Wessex Stadium is at 3pm.
Terras: Gadsby, Wisden, Graham, Bastafield, M Walker, Lambert, Bews, Nicholson, S Critchell, Dolbear, Lamb, Mutch, Sajic, K Critchell, Aldous, N Walker.
n Former Weymouth and Dorchester striker Trevor Senior has today been named new manager of Screwfix Premier Division side Bridgwater Town.
Ex-Bridport boss Senior, who has been out of the game since leaving the Bashley hot seat at the end of last season, said: "I'm delighted to have got the job and I am really looking forward to the challenge ahead.
"But I would just like to ensure parents in south and west Dorset that this will not effect my school holiday soccer coaching events which will carry on as normal."
Senior will be assisted at Fairfax
Park by close friend and one-time Magpies hot-shot Tony Diaz.
