Dorchester Town Youth FC cele-brated the club's first birthday in style with a two day, six-a-side tournament that proved to be a huge success.

A total of 68 teams from all over the county and beyond took part in the tournament at Sandringham Sports Centre which provided the organisers with quite a challenge despite months of preparation.

Some excellent football was played and the hosts reward for all their effort was to see four Dorchester Town teams reach the finals of their respective groups.

Only the Under-12 team were

ultimately successful however - a pleasing bonus for the team's manager and hard-working tournament organiser Phil Basford.

The first day of the event saw the Under-11, Under-13 and Under-15 sides do battle. In the Under-11 group Dorchester Town reached the semi-final after a 1-0 play-off victory over Blandford Blues and then made it to the final by beating Southill 5-4 on penalties.

Their opponents were Chickerell who defeated Avon 2-0 in their semi-final and then went on to become the tournament's first trophy winners with a 2-0 success.

The semi-finalists in the Under-13 section were two Dorchester Devils teams, Dorchester Town and Fry Club Colts. Dorchester Town and Fry Club Colts then met in the final with the visitors winning a penalty shoot-out by 6-5.

The first Under-15 semi-final saw another penalty decider with Weymouth Cougars edging out Dorchester Town by 8-7. In the final Cougars met Poole Town, who had beaten Portland 2-0 in their semi, and it was the East Dorset side who came out on top with a 4-2 penalty success after a goal-less game.

Another 36 teams took part in Sunday's competitions for Under-10, Under-12 and Under-14 sides.

Two DTYFC sides met in one semi-final of the Under-10 with the successful team meeting Blandford Kings - 1-0 semi-final victors over Sherborne - in the final. Blandford took the trophy with a 1-0 success.

The last four in the Under-12 section were Warmley Rangers, Southill, Dorchester Town and Hamworthy with the hosts going through to win the final against Southill with the only goal of the game.

Last final of the day was between Weymouth Cougars, who reached the final with a 5-4 win on penalties over Dorchester Town A, and Southill in the Under-14 group. Extra-time was needed before Cougars snatched the deciding goal.

Organiser Phil Basford thanked all the tournament sponsors including David Upshall Insurance Services, Hutchings Heating, Park House Pet Supplies, Lee's Engineering and Servicing, Imperial Garden, Stag Fencing and ECG Belt.
