CARL Alford broke his former club's hearts as Yeovil sealed their first FA Trophy win with a 2-0 victory against Stevenage at Villa Park yesterday.
Yeovil, famed as FA Cup giantkilling specialists, have never been beyond the semi-finals in non-league's premier cup competition but strikes from Alford and Adam Stansfield changed that.
Boro had enjoyed the early advantage with Jean Michel Sigere's glancing header forcing Yeovil goalkeeper Chris Weale into a flying save with just 60 seconds gone.
However, soon after the Glovers were in charge and when Stevenage failed to cope with Adam Lockwood's long throw-in, Alford performed an acrobatic overhead kick in the crowded area to give Gary Johnson's men the lead.
Stansfield could have extended that advantage two minutes later when his intended cross cannoned off the crossbar and missed the waiting Alford by inches.
And former Chelsea player Nick Crittenden was unfortunate to see his 35th-minute effort cleared off the line by Boro's Robin Trott.
The Glovers continued to control the game after the break and more creativity from Alford resulted in Terry Skiverton seeing his goalbound effort frantically cleared off the line.
Alford was again at the heart of Yeovil's second, patiently holding the ball up before releasing Stansfield, who effortlessly slid the ball under advancing Stevenage goalkeeper Paul Wilkerson.
