VANDALS have caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage after targeting 10 cars in the same street.

Windscreens, a side window and a number of wing mirrors were smashed during a series of vandalism attacks on cars parked in Markham Avenue, Weymouth.

Police said the vandals struck at about 2am on Saturday morning.

Angry car owners have blasted the attacks as annoying and pointless acts of vandalism.

Edna Jarvis, 58, who owns Jarvis Newsmarket, woke up at 5am on Saturday morning to find one of the wing mirrors of her blue Vauxhall estate car parked in Markham Avenue had been smashed.

Mrs Jarvis, who has owned the shop for more than 17 years, said: "Whoever has done this has caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage. I don't know who would want to cause such damage but it is very annoying and pointless and I feel bad for those who had their windscreens smashed or their side window."

Mrs Jarvis, who lives with her husband Roger above the shop in Chickerell Road, just around the corner from Markham Avenue, added: "If it is youngsters who have done this I think parents should keep an eye on their children.

"They should know where they are and what they are doing, especially at that time in the morning."

Two cars had their windscreens smashed, one had a side window shattered and seven cars had one of their wing mirrors cracked by the vandals.

Maureen Deeney, 56, who works at the shop, said: "It is really quite frightening that so many cars were damaged last night.

"I live very nearby in Hardy Avenue and this sort of vandalism does worry me.

"These people damaged a lot of cars but what will they do next time they decide to cause some trouble?

"It is just mindless vandalism and causes a lot of grief for a lot of people."

Sergeant Geoff Hicks, of Weymouth Police, said: "This was an act of mindless vandalism that has caused a lot of damage and upset a lot of people.
