THE new season looks like being a bit of a belter for Puddletown Cricket Club.
Brothers Ian and Phil Belt starred as the village side opened their Dorchester Evening League campaign with wins in Division One and the Knockout Cup while teenage prospect Dan, Ian's son, is also set to make his mark.
Ian (25) and Jim Ryall (41) gave Puddletown a flying start in their KO Cup first round tie against Buckland Newton and put 64 on the board before Belt's dismissal brought brother Phil to the crease. He continued in much the same vein and scored 30 as Puddletown reached 135-3 (Roger Edmunds
2-36, Shaun Coombs 1-24).
That proved far too many for Buckland Newton who struggled against the bowling of Phil Belt and were all out in 11.1 overs. Only Richard Green (10) made it into double figures as he finished with 5-20. Extras accounted for 36 of Buckland's 52 runs - and that left just six from the remaining nine batsmen! Puddletown play BAE in the next round.
In their Division One game against Moreton Mowers, 14-year-old sporting all rounder Dan Belt claimed the valuable wicket of Chris Hawkins after he smashed five sixes on his way to scoring 40 in their innings of 103-4 (Andy Jarvis 30, P Belt 2-23, D Belt 1-21).
Phil and Ian Belt then opened together and saw their side to victory in the last over with Ian (56) outscoring his brother who made 43.
Dan Belt was at it again with the bat in Puddletown Reserves' Division Three game against Martinstown. But his 35 had little support from his team-mates and their 57-8 (Tom Huish 10, Nick Joslin 3-18, I Sibley 3-17) was never going to be enough. But it wasn't that easy for Martinstown who found runs hard to come by until number five batsman Ian Sibley knocked an unbeaten 26 to finish the game with four overs in hand. Steven Chaldecott finished with
3-19 for Puddletown.
