CONCERN is growing that the Royal Marines base in Poole could be closed and the prime waterfront sold off to property developers.

The MoD is taking a close look at the base with a view to possibly relocating it somewhere else or developing it.

It is only a few years since the Hamworthy base was last reviewed by military bosses, which could be a bad sign according to Poole MP Robert Syms.

He is also worried that defence minister Geoffrey Hoon has written a personal letter to inform him of the latest study.

"The fact that the secretary of state has given me a letter raises my concern," said Mr Syms.

"It is a big worry and with property prices being what they are they may take a view that they could have substantial value form this site next to the water's edge."

A seven-month review of the base by the MoD has just started, according to a defence ministry spokesman.

In a letter to Mr Syms, Geoffrey Hoon said: "A study is to be conducted to determine the preferred locations from which to deliver the defence capabilities which we require of the units based at Royal Marines Poole.

"Reviews are carried out rou- tinely and this study will consider a range of options including alternative locations, the development of the existing site to meet changing defence needs, or retention of the status quo."

The base also employs between 70 and 90 civilians and has an important role in the local economy.

Mr Syms is concerned that the MoD is looking to make savings across the board and could view the sale of the Hamworthy base as a lucrative option.

"It seems they are doing this because they are short of money with bases and operations being carried out around the world," said Mr Syms.

"This review will cause seven months of uncertainty to the people who work there and the people within the local economy who rely on the base being there."

Annette Brooke, MP for Mid-Dorset and North Poole, has also expressed concern. She said: "The base is important in many ways and we are all proud of the long association we have had with the Royal Marines being in Poole."
