ANOTHER of those oh-so knowing American ironic comedies that are often just a little bit too clever for their own good.
At John Hughes (geddit?) High School, the students are the same as just about every other teenager in a teen movie. The popular jock takes a bet from the cocky blonde guy that he can transform the pretty ugly girl into the prom queen. But two people are in his way - his evil sister and the bitchy cheerleader.
Along the way we meet all the other stereotypes: the naked foreign exchange student, the beautiful weirdo, the token black guy, the desperate virgins, the perfect girl, the obsessive best friend and a very old undercover reporter.
It sets out to skewer conventions but almost inevitably ends up repeating them all and taking a series of heavily signposted sideswipes at a myriad of teen movie archetypes.
It's even considerate enough to cast a host of unknowns in the main roles including Chris Evans (not that one!), Mia Kirshner and Deon Richmond.
You have been warned...
