STYLISH youngsters from Budmouth Technology College in Weymouth have made a fashion statement with their green approach to creating the latest trends.

For 14 and 15-year-old students have given high street chic an eco-friendly twist with their Oxfam-inspired collection of outfits.

Sonya Blissett, textiles technology teacher at the college, said: "We started this project as a way of enhancing the pupils' learning of environmental issues by joining forces with Oxfam.

"They donated clothes they had been unable to sell in their St Mary Street shop and our Year 10 students - who could be the designers of tomorrow - had the challenge of turning the unwanted clothes into snazzy outfits they'd like to wear themselves."

The range of innovative gear the students came up with is set to go on display in the Oxfam shop window next month, along with some of the written work students did as part of their GCSE coursework.

And the recycling bug has caught on so much at Budmouth since the pupils began working with Oxfam that the school has now become a collection point for the charity shop with a range of recycling bins based on the school site.

Ruth Mackay, manager of the Oxfam shop, said: "We are always keen to involve more young people in the work of Oxfam, so we were delighted to be asked to help out with this project.

"I think the outfits that the kids came up with are all really lovely and the work they have done is very impressive.

"I think the students really learnt a lot about the work of Oxfam from this project and we hope to be involved in similar schemes with the school in the future."

Anna Asman, 15, said: "It has been really enjoyable doing this project because we have been able to use our imaginations."
