TOM PEACOCK returned home laden with trophies after dominating the Dorset county championships at Canford Magna.

The 21-year-old plus-three player from Dudsbury climaxed a weekend of non-stop success by beating club colleague Giles Legg at the last hole to snap up the matchplay title.

Peacock started by winning the Garrett Salver for the best 36-hole return in the strokeplay qualifier. He shot 71 and 73 to lead Ferndown pair Mark Davies and Ben Harvey by four strokes.

He also won the Colts championship to collect the Luffman Cup. His third piece of silverware was the Graham Butler Trophy awarded to the matchplay champion.

That was not all. He will represent Dorset in the English County Champions tournament at Woodhall Spa on September 21.

And he will also play in the triumphant Dudsbury team in the English champion club tournament at the Northampton and County club on September 6-7.

The best two scores from three over the 36 holes strokeplay decide the team title. So he lines up alongside Legg and Matt Walker, a two-handicap junior who is on the fringe of the county team.

Peacock's success was enjoyed by a group of around 50 relations and well-wishers over a Canford Magna course that was highly praised by the players for its superb condition.

Despite the torrential rain that dogged much of the championship, particularly the final day, the standard was high and the entertainment quality intense.

Both semi-finals finished on the 18th green. After putting out Dean Barnes in the first round, Legg beat Ben Harvey, another new Ferndown member who used to play at Dudsbury.

Peacock, whose only other major success was winning the St Mellion Trophy in Cornwall last year, edged out Tom Leech, another Ferndown player.

The final was a tense affair. Peacock birdied the second and the 11th to hold a two-hole advantage. Legg won the next hole before Peacock restored his two-stroke lead on the 13th.

Then Legg rallied by winning the 15th. He drew level with a wondrous 50-yard bunker shot to five feet for a birdie on the par-five 17th. But he was unable to repeat the feat when he found sand on the last.

He missed a 15-foot putt for par before Peacock rolled the ball in from six feet for his first county championship win.

Legg said: "It was a tight finish, but Tom deserved his win for he played superb golf all the weekend.

"It's great for Dudsbury to take all the honours and it will be a thrill for us all to represent the county in the national final."

Former Canford Magna captain Ashley Coombes played exceptionally well to qualify for the matchplay stages with rounds of 76 and 77.

John Blanks (Weymouth) won the Category 1 prize with a net 71. Mark Davies (Ferndown) claimed the Sika Trophy as the Mid Amateur Champion.

And county secretary Doug Pratt also earned praise for grabbing a squeegee to clear the greens of surface water to ensure the final progressed smoothly.
